Just Rambling Again 6/12/2013

Tuesday, June 11, 2013

Okay, I promised a giveaway and this is the day. To enter you have to be a follower and leave a comment. That's it. How much easier could it be? Here is what I'll be giving away. First this little ribbon tree. Yep, it can be yours. But there's more.

Then these little letters to place on a table or to hang on your wall. I also include the fun-tac that will hold it, so no nails or anything to damage your wall.

Then a book I've been touting for many years: Living A Beautiful Life.

So it's up to you now to enter and I've told you the rules. On with the regular post.
*

I love the this little kitchen/reading/dining area. Looking at the architecture, appliances, sink and windows, I think it might be in another country. Oooh, the colors definitely have something to do with it, but I just would like being able to have a little reading nook near a kitchen. This probably is due to the fact that I've burned many a meals while being here on this computer. My office is down a hall at the front of the house while the kitchen is on the back of the house. I even had the whole house fill with smoke while on this computer once and didn't know it until I went in to check on the roast I had forgotten I was searing. The whole house was filled with smoke except in this office. I had every window and door opened to get it out before Love Bunny got home from a few days away on business. I can't tell you how panicked I was because this has happened several times before. I was so afraid of what he'd say. The house aired out before he got home that evening but he could still tell I'd burned something from the smell in the garage even though I sprayed the entire house with Scentsy several times. He was kind. I now carry a kitchen timer with me wherever I go in the house if I have something on the stove.

I like paper lanterns outside. But sometimes we get high winds here in the desert so it tears them up rather quickly. I wondered if Mod Podging them would make them sturdier. I might try it on one and see how it works but I don't have much hope. And I'm too lazy to put them up and take them down when the winds come and go.

These are bags called Ruby Rag Tag bags. I've loved them for years but never bought one. She does the most gorgeous bags I've ever seen outside of Mary Francis bags, which are absolutely stunning.

I love the way she throws in loopy ribbon or fringe and the colors she uses.

I love this huge bathroom. Look. It has 3 sinks. Perfect if you have 3 girls! But the shower is huge with a sitting bench. My favorite shower would be one without a door to clean though. I have a friend that has a bathroom that is about the size of half of my house. Truly, she has more cabinets in there that any kitchen I've had in my life! Her shower is curved and stone but she said she's going to have to have it re-grouted as it tends not to last well. I can't remember the kind of stone. Anyway, there's no door on it as it doesn't need a door and that's my dream, to not have to clean the nasty scum and mold off of them. What am I saying? Hubs does that for me and it's not really bad in this area anyway. I can still lust, can't I?

Have you ever had a room with wacky colors like this? I haven't but I do still like the combination of colors she used.  Very pretty.

I've had old wine bottle boxes decorated similar to this many years ago. I think I gave them away as I haven't seen them around the house for years. They are usually pretty and very handy for additional shelves in a room.

A faint pink chair in a corner of a wainscoted room with a gorgeous rug underneath. Love the chair and ottoman. I'll be shopping for a new chair very, very soon.

Just something that touches my heart, a laundry basket with a pretty lining.

The chair is a bit busy and the room a bit dark for my taste but it is a very welcoming area in a room for reading a book.

A folding screen in a bedroom has always been a bit of drama I'd like to have had but I can never find room in any of my houses for it.

A European country lane invokes a lot of nostalgia for most of us.

I read recently where a famous person, I won't say whom, asks for her tour accommodations to have bottled water chilled to 21° (Isn't that ice instead of cold water?!), new toilet seats, special red toilet paper and $900 straws. Yes, that's $900 straws! What a waste.

This soothes my nerves after the post above! ;-) Just calming to my mind.

A beautiful way to store dishes, linens or just about anything. I think I'd love this one right here. ;-)

Each year, 36 million gallons of oil run off pavements into streams, rivers and eventually oceans in the United States. That is more oil than was spilled by the Exxon Valdez.

A Veteran Story

Sunday, June 2, 2013

My hubby is a retired Marine. While in the Marine Corps, he was a drill instructor during the Vietnam war. It compromised his hearing as he was just like the teenagers of today who think that the loud music they listen to—especially with the ear pods in their ears—won't affect them. It did. He's lost a great deal of his hearing though gradually. But we have many blessings and one of them is that part of his retirement is not taxable. He also gets free hearing aids from the Veterans Administration because teaching recruits how to shoot diminished his hearing, so it was job-related.

The VA takes really good care of its veterans. A golfing buddy and friend of our son's had cancer and survived it, luckily. Our son, who is a nurse and works for a VA hospital in California, plus was a Marine for about 6 years, kept telling him to go to the VA as the man served in Vietnam during the agent orange era. He kept saying no as it was too much trouble. Our son told him all he had to do was tell one person (an advocate) his name, serial number and years in Vietnam. That's it. Then the advocate would handle it from there. Well, he finally did. He called our son a few months later to thank our son profusely. Not only was he awarded a pension of a couple thousand dollars a month but it was retroactive. He got $36,000 in a lump sum that he never would have known about if not for our son. He was ecstatic. He now doesn't have to worry about money as much with that veteran pension.

As I said, the VA is an advocate for veterans and my hubby is also. He was contacted by the VA a couple of weeks ago and asked to come in to reevaluate his hearing again. (He normally does this about every 3 years, but this was a bit early and he was perplexed.) They wanted to see if he could get his hearing evaluated for more money that would be tax-free. We're waiting for the results but as his wife, I can guarantee they'll up it as it is getting worse. We were even thinking of getting a hearing-aid dog for him in the future if anything would happen to me because when he is in certain parts of the house he cannot hear the doorbell or even the security alarm if it goes off sometimes.

Well, while he was being evaluated, they told him they're going to get a louder doorbell chime for us and also an alarm clock that is louder and has a vibrating pad for underneath his pillow so that can wake him up. He's a sound sleeper. I was thrilled as these things will cost us nothing. While not every man is meant for military service, I thank those that have given up years of their life to protect this country. I cannot tell you enough what it means to my hubby and me. I honor them profusely and their wives and children who don't have them with them all the time. Also, the ones who have sacrificed their lives for the freedoms we have are greatly honored in this family. Thank you all, military men, women, wives, parents and children of those who serve or have served. You're special in this household.

Oh, btw, we received a box just 8 days after the evaluation. It contained a door chime with a very bright blinking light when the doorbell is rung—and it's portable so he can take it to any room in the house or garage—and an alarm clock with a large dial and loud ring and vibrator to put under his pillow. Yep, his advocate came through for him. (You can also tell I prepare these posts well in advance as this happened in early May.)

Now you tell me, what could be so cute and this work space?! Just adorable.

I've tried this with sheer curtains on our patio but it didn't work well as hubs' grape vines tore through them as fast as the wind could carry them. I'd suggest heavier fabric if you intend to do this. The wind in our desert can be very fierce sometimes.

Just a beautiful fabric wrapped sweetly. I've seen women's closets where all their fabrics are stored beautifully. This doesn't happen in this house. I can't keep them arranged that well as I'm always digging around for something I try to make work for a project. Just one look through it and they're all messed up. I could take on a permanent job of arranging the fabric I have!

A vintage table painted white with a white vintage bench and white "schoolhouse" chairs and a chandelier adds about as much elegance to this dining area as you can get. I think it's gorgeous!

Personally, I love the look of lavender but the smell is overcoming to me. Not the best fragrance but its healing properties can be wonderful when applied to burns. I've tried it on burns and it works wonderfully.

Just a celebration of red here. Love this color along with my favorite color pink.

Now, as busy as this room is, it's colorful. It isn't something I'd try as it's too busy for me, but for a tropical paradise decor, this would be perfect. Looks more like a teenager's room though.

It would be heaven to have this kind of garden. Most of my favorite flowers are here in pots and it's an easy way to garden without tearing up your yard. It would also be a place to garden that might not be conducive to a yard in your area. I love this look.

Just a cute piece of ephemera for you.

This bath is a bit exotic for me but it is beautiful.

Hopefully our clematis will grow this huge with time. Ours is still struggling a bit. This one is astounding though.

Just a cute little thatched cottage somewhere in the world. Love its symmetrical design with the blue trim and pink flowers, plus being on a body of water makes it somewhat desirable also.

When I saw these I thought how cute they were to decorate an egg cup when not in use at the breakfast table.

Looks like a garage sale, but I see a couple of lamps and shades I'd like to transform.

This says it all. Endure to the end, my blogger friends. It will be worth it. :-)

Caroline Speaks

Tuesday, January 1, 2013

I really recommend you go to my Pinterest and view almost 7,000 photos I've put on there. I think you'll enjoy viewing the ones I've come up with. Truly!
*

Also, this is my 1300th post. Yippee! I'm nothing if not tenacious. ;-)
*

I wish all of you a very Happy and Prosperous New Year. I never make resolutions or set goals. Never have and don't see that changing in the coming years. I do, however, vow to immerse myself in Scriptures this year. I was most lax this past year. I try to lead a spiritual and Christ-centered life but I am far lacking. I vow to be better.
*

It's 3 AM and I can't sleep, I so came in here to the computer room to blog. Isn't it pathetic when we can't sleep that we turn to blogging?

Anyway, got an email from granddaughter saying that Caroline is hurt because Santa forgot to bring her the Talking Mushroom. Well, that got everyone on her Facebook page looking for a "taking mushroom"! We think it's a book. Even her Poppop, my hubby, googled it to see what it could be. We think now it's a book that perhaps was read to her in her daycare class. This kid doesn't forget a thing!

Caroline was "sweeping" the kitchen with her tiny broom the other day saying, "forward" and "backward." She looked at her mother and said, "I can speak English and Spanish, mummy."  We don't know if forward or backward is the English or the Spanish! ;-)

Then a few days later she told her mummy that she could speak English, Spanish and Magic. I'd like to learn that Magic language myself. :-) Her daddy does speak Spanish, as do her other grandparents, even though he's losing the ability since he's lived in this country before he was a teenager but I don't think she knows much of it. (He is now a citizen and lost his diplomatic immunity when he had to give up his Guatemalan passport. So now he has to watch his speeding. Before, he'd just show them his diplomat passport from his mother working at the embassy. Now, he suffers like the rest of us! LOL) I think she just speaks the language of love to them and they understand because her paternal grandmother can't speak English. But it's so cute to watch them together.

I love making these mosaics for blogs. I don't do real mosaics, however, but eye candy is always on my posts.

An unusual combination of colors done beautifully.

I love this upholstery.

Pretty pillows serving as a vignette are always welcome around this house.

You can see yourself here, right?! ;-)

I remember when those chairs were NEW; now they're vintage.

Bathrooms that don't require a door or curtain on the shower always intrigue me.

Now, these are some cowgirl boots!

And pretty little petit point purses? Uh-huh!

Gorgeous place to be.

Edible eye candy. :-)

Absolutely stunning colors in bedding from Horchow.

Another quaint street.

Tropical leisure.

And lovely dishes.

A Car Story

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Have you noticed that cars were becoming a bit smaller several years ago but now Detroit's fascination with the look of cruise ships is bringing back larger cars? I love my Camry but my dream car is a Lexus. I saw one at the dealership when we were buying hubs' little truck. (Why men's fascination with trucks and SUVs?) They had a gorgeous black one there waiting for its owner to pick it up. I wanted to sit in it but the owner was expected posthaste and I didn't want to be caught in it. It had every single thing that could be included in a car. The owner was a retired military man and he paid $75,000 for that car for his wife. That's two and a half times our first house in California! WOW! I was impressed. But Lexus cars have a 500,000 mile warranty. That would probably be close to the rest of my life actually.

My son has a Mercedes S600 and it's truly amazing, but I'd still love to have the Lexus. This is his second Mercedes S600 and it has every single thing available except the feature that slows it down if you're too close to the car in front of you. I loved riding in it as it's very luxurious but he wanted me to take it to the grocery store while visiting him a couple of years ago. I was a nervous wreck driving it. He actually told me he took it out into the desert on a deserted road and got it up to 140 mph. I said, 'Son, don't ever tell your mother you got a car up to 140 mph.' (Another thing you never want to hear from your son: Mom, have the cops called you yet? This happened when he was in a motorcycle accident many years ago before he was married. He got mangled a bit but is alive. He doesn't own motorcycles anymore.) He laughed and said he was safe but he promised to go the speed limit—as much as a Californian can keep it at the speed limit. And we all know what that means on the freeways at rush hour.

The one he has now he got out of Texas and had it shipped to him. It was in great shape but a few months after he received it, it had a minor problem. He consulted a local dealer and the cost to fix it was $23,000. He said he'd fix it himself for that amount of money. No kidding! Also, he ran out of gas one day. That, in a Mercedes, cost him $800. Yep, they had to reset the computer and those services don't come cheap, trust me. He loves tinkering; it comes from the days when he was a poor Marine. ;-) Oh, and for those of you that think this may be bragging just a bit, his wife is the brains of that family. ;-)

A beautiful french bedroom with chandelier. I even like the golden colors on the bed with the pink walls.

A brave homeowner painted her fireplace wall red. I think it's lovely. Like her choice in sofas also.

Cute little sconce holding some flowers left over from the season.

Cute way to decorate with photos and paintings of roses all along her sofa wall.

Snazzy little apron. Love the fabric and the ruffles.

Pretty little pots and pitchers as a display in this cupboard.

Gorgeous eye candy.

Lovely French sofa in pink. The curves make it especially lovely.

Cute way to store your scissors and a bit of ribbon.

Another little cottage in Carmel.

What a cute idea for double sinks but I wonder if they're practical. They're kind of high to bend over to wash your face. I think I prefer the lower kind of sinks.

A lovely but different living room. I think I'd like it as an outdoor room more.

My kinda chick with a pompom over her bed!

A bunch of lovely book markers.

I always love draping curtains over entry or door ways. Adds a touch of drama. This is especially cute in a little girl's closet.
